I study how students feel in physical education—enjoyment, pride, boredom, anxiety—and how teaching, including the variety it offers, relates to their motivation and participation.

What do students feel in physical education, and why?

I study achievement emotions such as enjoyment, pride, boredom and anxiety in PE lessons. Using control-value theory, I ask how students’ sense of control and the value they see in PE relate to these emotions.

How does variety in PE lessons relate to motivation and participation?

I study variety support: teachers varying activities, equipment, groupings and tasks. I also ask whether variety works as a fourth basic psychological need, alongside autonomy, competence and relatedness.

How can we measure students’ emotions in PE well?

I adapt and validate questionnaires and observation tools for physical education, including a brief questionnaire for elementary school students.
